Kenney Polson

Saxophonist/ Composer/ Arranger/ Educator

Kenney Polson has steadily developed as an accomplished saxophonist/composer since the age of 12. His fluent musical styles include jazz, Latin, classical, new age, rhythm & blues, funk, and gospel. He grew up in Bakersfield, CA where he first started playing saxophone in Junior High School and continued music while attending Bakersfield High School. Later, he attended Fresno City College, Fresno, California and earned an Associate of Arts Degree (Music). Then, he studied at California State University- Fresno earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Music Education). Kenney has earned a Masters of Music Degree (Jazz composition/Arranging) at the internationally acclaimed Fine Arts School at Howard University in Washington, DC.

 

Kenney began his professional career at an early age and always found himself driving up and down the freeways in Central California playing with as many people as he could. As a saxophonist, Polson performed on shows with Little Richard, Bettye Swan, Z.Z. Hill, Joe with Wynton MarsalisWilliams, D.J. Rodgers, Gil Scott-Heron, Lee Garrett, Phillip Walker, Michael Henderson and a host of others. Kenney has been on tour in Japan, Korea, Hawaii, Colombia, Brazil, and over a dozen Caribbean Islands. Kenney has also performed on national television (CBS) with internationally known jazz artists Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Heath, Phil Woods, David Sanborn, and Wynton Marsalis.

 

Mr. Polson has been involved as an educator during his musical career and has been sought as a clinician and also as an adjudicator for concert band and jazz band competitions. He has taught both public and private school in Fresno, California; Bogota, Colombia; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has given clinics, performances, and lectures on jazz in Beijing, China. He has taught Jazz at Merced College, Marylhurst University, and at theWith James Moody Arts & Communication Magnet Academy in Beaverton, Oregon.

 

Kenney has recorded with some of Brazil's most famous jazz musicians, many of which are represented on his compact disc, Paradise, which contains several of his smooth jazz compositions and arrangements. Mr. Polson's music has also been heard on radio stations nationwide. According to New Music Weekly, "No More Lonely Nights" from the Paradise CD made it to number 32 on the adult contemporary charts. "Uncle Famous" from the Paradise CD has been heard on many smooth jazz radio stations nationwide.

 

Kenney's new CD "Serendipity" features several national artists: Bruce Conte (guitarist - formerly with Tower of Power), Tom Grant (pianist- smooth jazz pioneer), Roger Smith (keyboardist - smooth jazz artist), Fred Wesley (trombonist - formerly with James Brown and Parliament/Funkadelic), Phil Upchurch (guitarist - formerly with Donny Hathaway and George Benson ), Larry Gittens (Trumpet- presently with Kool & the Gang), and very special guest Michael Henderson (vocalist/bassist formerly with Miles Davis and Norman Connors).

 

The new CD "Serendipity" is a blend of old school R&B and amooth jazz. It is packed with excitement, and includes some very heavy nationally known artists.
