1977-79 Kenney attended Fresno City College in Fresno, CA. During that time he studied jazz with Mr. Gilbert Rodriguez, clarinet and saxophone with Mr. Eiji Maruko, music theory with Mr. Vincent Moats and music history with Mr. Bob Neilson. He performed in the Woodwind Choir, Concert Band, and Jazz Ensemble. He received his Associate of Arts degree in 1979.
1979-85 Next, he went to Fresno State and during that time studied saxophone with Mr. Frank Bibb and Ms. Shelly Hanson, flute with Renee Grizzell, orchestration techniques from Al Harkins. He performed in Marching Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Woodwind Choir, Jazz Band B under the direction of Dr. Ritchie Clendenon and Jazz Band A under the direction of Dr. Lawrence Sutherland. He Earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1983 and his teaching credential in 1985.
1987 Kenney attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City during the summer of 1987 and earned Level 1 certification of Orff-Schulwerk. There he studied with Karen Jenson.
1991 Kenney returned to the University of Missouri-Kansas City during summer of 1991 and earned Level 2 certification of Orff-Schulwerk again studying with Karen Jenson.
1995-97 After living in South America for 7 years Kenney decided to return to academia. He entered prestigious Howard University and studied saxophone with Mr. Charlie Young, commercial music with Mr. Webster Lewis, piano with Mr. Charles Covington, jazz history, jazz styles & structures with Dr. Arthur Dawkins, jazz improvisation, jazz composition and jazz arranging with Dr. Reppard Stone. He performed in Jazz Ensemble A and Jazz Ensemble B under the direction of Mr. Fred Irby. Kenney earned a Masters of Music with an emphasis in jazz arranging and composition from Howard University in May 1997.
1997 The very same summer Kenney attended George Mason University and completed Orff-Schulwerk Level 3 certification.
